Nobody comes home from a safari rested. You have been getting up at five for a week, bouncing across country in an open vehicle, and running on adrenaline every time something moved in the grass. The islands exist to fix that. Four nights on the Indian Ocean at the end of a trip is not an indulgence bolted onto the itinerary. It is the part that makes the whole thing land.

The single most common mistake we correct is a beach extension too short to justify its own transfers. Getting from a bush airstrip to an island usually costs the better part of a day at each end. Two nights means you unpack, sleep, and leave. Four is the minimum where the island becomes part of the trip rather than a layover with better sand.
Which island depends entirely on where the safari was. Zanzibar, Mnemba, Pemba and Mafia pair with Tanzania. Lamu pairs with Kenya. The Bazaruto and Benguerra islands pair with South Africa and Kruger. The Seychelles works from almost anywhere but costs a long flight.
Madagascar is the exception to all of this. It is not a beach extension, it is a destination in its own right, and it needs eleven days minimum. Roughly ninety percent of what lives there lives nowhere else.

Zanzibar & the Tanzanian Coast

The natural close to any northern circuit. Mnemba is a private island you can walk around in twenty minutes, with ten bandas and green turtles nesting on the beach. Mafia has whale sharks and a marine park. Pemba has deep-sea fishing in the channel and diving with almost nobody on it.

Not a beach add-on. Indri the size of a small child calling across the rainforest, tsingy limestone you cannot walk on barefoot, baobab avenues, sub-fossils of extinct giant lemurs, and reefs at the end of it. The most extraordinary place in this region and the most demanding to travel.

The Questions Worth Asking First.
How many nights should I add to a safari?
Four minimum. Getting from a bush airstrip to an island usually costs most of a day at each end, so two nights means you unpack, sleep and leave. Four is where it starts working. Five to seven is where people come home saying it was the best part of the trip.
Which island goes with which safari?
Zanzibar, Mnemba, Pemba and Mafia pair with Tanzania. Lamu pairs with Kenya. Bazaruto and Benguerra pair with South Africa and Kruger. The Seychelles works from almost anywhere but adds a long flight and is usually worth it only if you are staying a week or more.
Is Madagascar a beach destination?
No, and treating it as one is the most common way people are disappointed by it. It is a wildlife and landscape destination with beaches attached. Around ninety percent of its species exist nowhere else. Allow eleven days minimum, expect internal flights and long transfers, and go for the lemurs, the tsingy and the baobabs. The reef is a bonus.
There are three Madagascar itineraries. Which one?
Luxury Madagascar Adventure is the low-friction option: eleven days, three properties, two long stays, ending on a private island. Rainforest and Ocean is the ecosystem contrast: genuine eastern rainforest with the Indri, finishing at a marine reserve. Southern Madagascar is the grand tour: seven properties, eleven parks, and the only one with the Avenue of the Baobabs and the Isalo canyons. It is also the most transfer-heavy.
Is diving worth planning the trip around?
In places, yes. Pemba, Mafia and the Bazaruto reefs are genuinely excellent and far less trafficked than the Red Sea or Southeast Asia. Alphonse in the Seychelles is world class specifically for saltwater fly fishing rather than diving.
