East Africa is the Africa in your head. Flat gold plains, flat-topped acacias, and a herd so large it takes three days to pass a single point. It is also the region where timing punishes you hardest. The Migration is not a place, it is a moving event, and the difference between February in the Ndutu and August on the Mara River is not a detail. It is the entire trip.

The Great Migration is not an attraction you visit. It is close to two million animals moving in a slow loop between the southern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, and where they are in March has nothing to do with where they are in August. Book the wrong month in the right country and you will have a lovely holiday looking at empty grass.
Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are dated, capped daily, and non-transferable. In Rwanda they sell out first for the drier months. A trip built around a permit starts with the permit and works outward, never the other way around.
So we start with what you want to see, and let that choose the country and the month. Then we build the route so the internal flights and light aircraft work with you rather than eating three days of your trip.

When to Go.
Start with what you want to see, and let the calendar choose the route rather than the other way around.

What to Expect
Every Trip Is Priced From Scratch.
There is no shelf price here. Two travelers on the same route in July and in March can pay very different amounts, because the camps that make a trip unforgettable price by season, by night, and by how far ahead you commit. Anyone quoting a fixed number before asking your dates is quoting you someone else's trip.

Before You Go
The Questions Worth Asking First.
Kenya or Tanzania for a first safari?
Both are excellent and the honest answer depends on your dates. Tanzania's northern circuit gives you the Ngorongoro Crater, which has no equivalent anywhere, and the Serengeti is vast. Kenya's private conservancies give you off-road driving, night drives and walking, which changes what a game drive actually feels like. If you are traveling July to October and want the river crossings, we usually lean Kenya. January to March for the calving, we lean Tanzania.
How many days do I need for the Migration?
Seven nights on the ground is a realistic minimum, and ten is better. The herds move, and a single camp for three nights leaves you no room to follow them. Building in two camps in different sectors is the single most useful thing you can do to protect the trip against timing.
How hard is gorilla trekking?
Harder than most people expect and manageable for most reasonably fit travelers. You are walking at altitude, often on steep, muddy ground, for anywhere between one and six hours before you find the family. Porters are available and worth taking. Once you reach them you get one hour, and it is over quickly.
Can I combine East Africa with a beach?
Yes, and it is the natural ending. Zanzibar is a short hop from the northern circuit, and Mnemba, Pemba and Mafia are all within reach. From Kenya, the Lamu Archipelago is the quieter and more interesting choice. Allow four nights minimum or it is not worth the transfer.
Is the Crater worth it given the crowds?
Yes, with one condition: get down early. The Ngorongoro Crater floor is a genuinely unique ecosystem and the density of animals in a contained space is unlike anywhere else in Africa. It is also busy by mid-morning. Staying on the rim and descending at first light is the difference between the two experiences.
