Southern Africa

The Region That
Rewards a Second Trip.

Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Private conservancies, the Okavango by mokoro, walking safaris that go out on foot, and the easiest logistics in Africa.

If East Africa is the safari you have already imagined, Southern Africa is the one you did not know to ask for. Water instead of plains. Walking instead of driving. Leopards at ten metres with no other vehicle in sight, because the reserve caps how many can attend a sighting. It is also where a first-time traveler is least likely to get it wrong, which is why more of our first safaris start here than anywhere else.

Why Southern Africa With TDC

The Difference Is Private Land.

National parks restrict off-road driving, night drives and walking on foot. Private reserves and concessions allow all three, and they cap the number of vehicles that can attend a sighting. That single distinction is why a photograph from Sabi Sand looks different to one from a public park, and it almost never appears in a brochure.

Southern Africa is also the most forgiving region to travel. Sabi Sand and the reserves bordering Kruger deliver in every month of the year, malaria risk is low or absent in several areas, flights are short, and Cape Town gives you a genuinely world-class city at one end of the trip.

The trade is that there is more to choose between here than anywhere else on the continent. Four Zimbabwe itineraries that look similar on paper are in fact four different trips. Sorting that out is most of what we do.

Timing

When to Go.

Start with what you want to see, and let the calendar choose the route rather than the other way around.

WhenWhat Is Happening
May – OctDry season, and the strongest game viewing of the year. Vegetation thins and animals concentrate around water, which makes sightings both more frequent and more predictable.
Jul – SepPeak Okavango flood. Mokoro season in the Delta, when the channels are fullest and the water camps are at their best. Also the peak window for Zambia's walking safaris.
Apr – OctMana Pools and the Zambezi valley camps. Most close entirely outside this window, so a canoe or walking safari there fixes your dates before anything else does.
Nov – AprGreen season. Newborns, dramatic skies, and meaningfully lower rates. Some camps close and some roads flood, so routing matters more than usual.
Year roundSabi Sand and the private reserves bordering Kruger deliver in every month, which is why they are our usual answer for a first safari on fixed dates.

What to Expect

Every Trip Is Priced From Scratch.

There is no shelf price here. Two travelers on the same route in July and in March can pay very different amounts, because the camps that make a trip unforgettable price by season, by night, and by how far ahead you commit. Anyone quoting a fixed number before asking your dates is quoting you someone else's trip.

Tell us when you want to go, how many of you there are, and what you want the trip to feel like. We will come back with a designed route and a real number.

What a TDC Quote Includes

  • Camps and lodges selected for the exact season you are traveling, not a generic year-round list
  • Internal flights, light aircraft, and road transfers between camps, which is where most self-booked trips come apart
  • Park fees, conservancy levies, and guiding
  • Trekking permits where required, secured well in advance
  • A full day-by-day route with the reasoning behind the order
  • Someone reachable in your time zone from inquiry through your return

Before You Go

The Questions Worth Asking First.

There are four Zimbabwe itineraries. How do I choose?

Family runs year round and has connected children's tents, treehouses and a village visit. Adventure is the Hwange-deep classic with two camps there and the narrowest season, May to October. Gems is the fourteen-day scenic route that adds Mana Pools and finishes at Singita Pamushana. Sustainability is the same length and the same Singita finish, but routed through the rhino sanctuary, the anti-poaching unit and a rewilded reserve. If conservation access is the point, take Sustainability. If wildlife density is the point, take Adventure.

Botswana is expensive. Is it worth it?

Often, and not always. What you buy in Botswana is low density: small camps, few vehicles, and enormous private concessions. If you have been on safari before and found the vehicle traffic frustrating, it is worth every cent. If this is your first safari and the budget is finite, Sabi Sand and Zimbabwe deliver more animal per dollar, and we would rather put you there for longer.

Which reserves are malaria-free?

Parts of South Africa, including the Eastern Cape and Waterberg reserves, are malaria-free, and Cape Town and the Winelands carry no risk at all. Sabi Sand and Kruger are low risk, lower still in the dry winter months. Your physician makes the call, but if malaria-free is a requirement we will tell you before you settle on a route rather than after.

Can I do Victoria Falls and the Delta in one trip?

Yes, and they pair naturally. The flight is short and the two are completely different experiences, which is the point. Allow at least three nights in the Delta or the transfer time is not justified, and note that the Falls are at their most dramatic between February and May, which is not peak game viewing season.

What is a walking safari actually like?

Slow, quiet and much more absorbing than most people expect. You go out at first light with an armed guide and usually a tracker, cover a few kilometres, and spend as much time on tracks, dung, birds and trees as on big animals. When you do meet something large on foot, the change in scale is the whole reason to do it. Zambia and Mana Pools are the two best places for it.
